PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Cornell's offense exploded for eight runs and the Big Red shut down a late Penn rally for an 8-4 victory on Sunday afternoon over Penn at Penn Park. The Big Red improved to 12-20 (7-8 Ivy), while the Quakers slipped to 13-20 (8-9 Ivy).
Cornell's seventh Ivy win of the season surpassed last year's season total when the Big Red went 6-14. It needs just one more win this season to match last year's overall victory count and two to surpass it.
Senior Tori Togashi was 1-for-3 with four RBI and sophomore Kate Jencarelli had two hits and three RBI. Senior Megan Murray finished the day 2-for-3 with three run scored in the win. The offensive explosion made a winner out of sophomore Lisa Nelson, who scattered five hits and surrendered three earned runs in picking up the complete game victory. She struck out five batters on the afternoon in improving to 7-6 in the circle. Prior to Sunday, the Big Red had scored just seven runs total in its previous five Ivy League contests.
Leading 4-3 heading into the seventh, Cornell tagged on four insurance runs after stranding the game-tying Quaker run the inning prior. Togashi cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right and Kate Jencarelli plated Togashi with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to five.
The Big Red never trailed, scoring a run in the top of the first off Penn starter Mason Spichiger. Jencarelli had the first of her three RBI on the afternoon with a single to center to get Cornell on the board, then singled in the third to drive in one of the Big Red's two runs as the visitors went up 3-0. Togashi also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Cornell also scored a run in the fourth on a Sarah Murray double before its big seventh.
Penn loaded the bases in the seventh with one out on a walk and a pair of infield singles, but Nelson shut the door despite allowing a run on a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.
Cornell is currently scheduled to face crosstown rival Ithaca College on Wednesday, April 25 at 4:30 p.m. for a single game at Niemand*Robison Field.
