PHILADELPHIA — Senior
Priyanka Shah and sophomore
Ananya Dua won the No. 1 doubles match, then went on to win the top two singles matches, but the women's tennis team was handed a 4-3 loss on Sunday by host Penn at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers.
Cornell (6-10, 0-3 Ivy League) got its third and final point from senior
Madison Stevens, who won in a super tiebreaker in No. 4 singles after Penn (8-10, 1-2) had already clinched with victories in straight sets at the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 positions.
Dua and Shah wrapped up an impressive weekend of doubles play. After defeating a nationally-ranked tandem from Princeton on Friday, the Big Red duo won a handy 6-2 match at the top spot Sunday. But Penn won the other doubles matches to take the early lead. Dua's victory at No. 2 singles marked just the third loss in 13 singles matches for her opponent.
The Big Red continues its travel next weekend with a trip to Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Saturday and a meeting with Harvard at 1 p.m Sunday.
