Michelle Ryndin also fell in the quarterfinals as the Cornell women's tennis team finished play at the ITA Division I Women's New England Regional Championship at Yale.
Fouhety lost to Syracuse's Monika Wojcik, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, after forcing a third set by taking the second. She finished the tournament 5-1 in singles, winning two qualifying matches and three main-draw matches. She was one of two qualifiers to reach the quarterfinals.
"Chloe's run was incredible," said
Spencer Furman, the Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis. "As a freshman, to be able to come in and play quality opponents and win five matches really speaks to her level. With freshmen, you never know, because there's always a curve getting used to college. She proved she's ready to play with the best players in the region."
Loudon and Ryndin opened Sunday with an 8-6 win over ninth-seeded Olivia Mellynchuk and Emily Ruckno of Army in the round of 16. They then fell to fourth-seeded Orly Ogilvy and Leena Friedman of Yale, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. Fouhety had beaten Ogilvy in singles on Saturday.
"They proved it last year, being named All-Ivy First Team, and they showed they're right there with the best teams in the region," Furman said of Loudon and Ryndin. "They had Yale's No. 1 team right there at the end. Overall, it was a great weekend for them as well."
Fouhety and senior
Victoria Zhao lost to sixth-seeded Sam Grosjean and Alexandra Orlins of Dartmouth, 8-1, in the doubles round of 16.
Cornell returns to action Oct. 23-25 at the Ivy League Championship, hosted by Columbia in New York.
"It was great for the team to see our level against the best teams in the region," Furman said. "I'm really proud of the way we competed and represented Cornell. We were in tough situations the whole weekend, and I think this kind of tournament makes our team better. I'm just proud of the effort the girls gave and excited to build on it."
