BURLINGTON, Vt. – The No. 18 Maine field hockey team improved to 6-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over the Big Red this afternoon at Moulton Winder Field in the opening round to the Catamount Classic. Cornell (1-4) will return to action on Sunday when it plays the host Vermont at 1:30 p.m.
The Black Bears, currently ranked second in the nation in goals per game (4.2) continued its hot streak with five different players finding the back of the net. Nina Keur scored and added an assist, one of four on the day for Maine, to lead the team with three points.
Cornell was outshot 24-3 and outcornered 13-2, but was kept in the game by the solid play of
Maddie Henry, who finished with eight saves, while midfielder
Kirsten Pienaar registered a defensive save.
Most of the Black Bears opportunities came in the first half, as the Big Red closed the gap over the final 35 minutes, trailing 7-3 in shots, but putting all three of its shots on goal, and 3-2 in penalty corner.
Maine scored in just the fifth minute of the contest and jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half. Cornell tightened up its play in the second stanza before two late Black Bear goals, including one in the final minutes of the contest, accounted for the 5-0 final.
