BURLINGTON, Vt. – Cornell freshman
Claire Jones scored in the 47th minute to stake the Big Red field hockey team a 1-0 lead, but Vermont responded with a pair of late goals to steal a 2-1 victory this afternoon at the Catamount Classic in Burlington, Vt.
The Big Red's tally was set up by some great defense as
Kirsten Pienaar took the ball away from a Vermont player in the midfield and sent a pass 25 yards to
Taylor Reed. She carried the ball in to the top center of the circle before slipping a pass to Jones. The initial shot was saved by Sierra Espeland, but the goalie was unable to sweep it away and Jones put the rebound into the back of the net.
Cornell continued to carry the play through the majority of the second half, but the Catamounts were opportunistic down the stretch, scoring twice in a nine-minute spurt to take the 2-1 lead.
The Big Red held the 16-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 7-5 lead in penalty corners. Espeland made five saves in the win, while
Maddie Henry stopped two in the loss.
Cornell (1-5) is back in action next weekend when it opens Ivy League play vs. Penn at Marsha Dodson Field for Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 22 at noon.
