ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell field hockey team came up short on Homecoming, falling to Penn, 1-0, this afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.
Penn carried the play through much of the first half and scored in just the ninth minute when Alexa Schneck collected a pass in the circle and used a tremendous individual effort to blast a shot past
Maddie Henry for her first goal of the season.
Cornell (1-6) evened the play after the intermission and had several outstanding chances late in the contest, capped by a penalty corner opportunity after time expired. The Big Red sent the entire team into the circle and a blazing shot by
Taylor Gladd appeared to hand Cornell the equalizer but it was waved off by the referee.
"I'm proud of our team and how we fought at the end to get a result," said interim coach
Steve Simpson. "I thought we played better as the game went on and we gave ourselves a real chance at the end. It's unfortunate to have the goal waved off, and on a different day maybe that call goes a different way, but all-in-all we showed real resolve and for a young team that's important to see."
Penn (4-3) held the 13-7 advantage in shots (8-6 in shots on goal) and had the 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Henry had a solid game with seven saves, while Penn's Ava Rosati finished with six.
The Big Red welcomes Colgate for a midweek matchup at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at Marsha Dodson Field.
