LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the second game in a row, the Big Red field hockey team had an outstanding second half, but couldn't overcome a halftime deficit as Lock Haven earned a 3-1 victory this afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field in Lock Haven, Pa.
Cornell got its first goal of the season in the 50th minute when
Maddy Conklin deflected a shot by
Kirsten Pienaar to make it a 3-1 contest. The Big Red pulled its goalie for the benefit of an extra forward with four minutes remaining in the contest, but couldn't close the gap.
Lock Haven scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game thanks to Tamia Roach, who scored once and set up the other two tallies for the Lady Eagles, and goalie Brianna Deangelis made three saves all in the second half to make the advantage hold up.
LHU held a 4-1 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in penalty corners at the half, but Cornell reversed the trend in the second stanza and when the final whistle blew the home team had the slim 7-6 advantage in shots and the teams had registered five penalty corners apiece.
Maddie Henry made three saves to go along with several outstanding defensive plays to break up scoring chances for the Lady Eagles.
Cornell (0-2) travels to Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 7 for a contest at 3 p.m., before returning to Ithaca for its home opener vs. Rider at Marsha Dodson Field on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m.
