Box Score HOUSTON – Cornell won an epic first set, 35-33, to jump out to an early lead over Houston, but the host Cougars battled back to earn the 3-1 victory in the nightcap of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup. UH won the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-18, before using a late rally to nip the Big Red, 25-23, in the decisive fourth set.
Cornell (3-2) was led by Houston native,
Carla Sganderlla, who finished the match with 16 kills and a .208 hitting percentage to go along with nine digs and three block assists.
Samanta Arenas also finished in double digits (11), while
Jenna Phelps posted a team-high .294 hitting percentage (8-3-17). Phelps also had four block assists, while
Kara Rogers and
Jada Stackhouse registered five apiece.
The setting duo of
Zoe Chamness and
Katie Randolph tallied 28 and 14 assist, respectively, and libero
Lily Barber posted 25 digs.
Houston (9-1) was led by Gabi Zelaya's 16 kills.
The tournament continues tomorrow with Cornell facing UTSA (9:30 a.m. CST) and Houston Baptist (2:30 p.m. CST).
