HOUSTON – The Cornell volleyball team started strong, picking up a 25-22 victory in the first set against Houston Baptists, but the Huskies fought back to win the next three sets – 25-24, 25-22, 26-24 – and earn a 3-1 victory over the Big Red.
Cornell (4-3) was led by
Jillienne Bennett's career-high 17 kills. The freshman right-side hitter was outstanding, posting a .424 hitting percentage (17-3-33) to lead the Big Red.
Jenna Phelps and
Carla Sganderlla finished with 11 kills apiece.
Libero
Lily Barber (21 digs) and
Natalie Danenhauer (12 digs) anchored the defense, while setters
Zoe Chamness and
Katie Randolph finished with 30 and 18 assists, respectively.
HBU (5-4) was led Kelly Colwell's 13 points, while Megan Patillo and Kayla Davenport finished with 11 kills apiece.
Cornell wraps up the tournament season with a trip to Valparaiso's Crusader Classic on the weekend of Sept. 14-15. The Big Red takes on the host school on Friday at 4 p.m. CST, before coming back the next day to play Wright State (10 a.m. CST) and Western Illinois (12:30 p.m. CST).
