HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior forward
Grace Royer notched one goal and one assist to lead the Big Red to a 4-1 victory at Colgate, Tuesday evening.
Freshman
Caroline Ramsey opened the scoring for the Big Red as she deflects a pass, from sophomore
Claire Jones, into the Raider net. Ramsey found the back of the net just two minutes and 30 seconds into the game. Meghan Minturn answered with a goal of her own just over two minutes later. With 10:20 left in the first quarter, the score was tied at 1-1.
Freshman
Bridget Mahoney scored her first goal of the season for a Big Red one-goal lead at 13:37 in the first quarter. Sitting in front of the goalie, Mahoney received a pass and redirected the ball to move the net minder for a Cornell goal. The Big Red closed out the first quarter with a 2-1 lead.
The second quarter turned out to be a midfield game as Cornell was only able to shoot off 3 shots, while Colgate shot just one. The score remained 2-1 as the game entered halftime.
Cornell's offense picked up in the third quarter with two additional Big Red goals to give it a 4-1 lead going into the fourth quarter. Royer and junior
Juliana Tardif combined for a score in the 38th minute. Royer, with her fifth goal of the season, beat the goaltender to hit the backboard. Junior
Julianne Mangano followed her fellow classmate when she beat sophomore goalkeeper Anna Unger for a goal of her own. Receiving a pass from Royer, Mangano popped the ball into the air, over the goalie. Originally stopped by Unger, the ball trickled into the net for a fourth Big Red goal.
The Raider offense held the advantage during the fourth quarter with five shots to Cornell's one and three penalty corners to the Big Red's zero. But the Cornell defense held strong not letting any shots past the end line and into the net. With four saves in the fourth quarter the Big Red sealed the 4-1 win.
Cornell held the 14-8 advantage in shots with a 12-6 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red also held the advantage in penalty corners, 4-3.
Senior goalie
Maddie Henry made four stops in 56 minutes of play while freshman goalie
Aerin Park earned one in four minutes. With this fourth win on the season, 19th in her career, Henry is tied for second, with Yanaka Bernal (1987-90), Kaitlin Tierney (2000-03) and
Alex Botte (2008-11) in career wins.
