ITHACA, N.Y. - The Big Red sprint football team scored two touchdowns but it was visiting Mansfield that took home the 44-13 victory, Friday night.
Mansfield dominated the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns in the 15 minute period the Mounties were 14-0 at the first quarter break. The Mounties first touchdown was scored on a five-yard rush by Koby Peacock and the second was a 36-yard run by Dajuan Buie off an interception.
The Big Red made its way down the field near the end of the first quarter and scored its first touchdown at the very beginning of the second. Freshman
Justin Mandell caught a pass from junior quarterback
Aneesh Agrawal for a Cornell touchdown. Mansfield responded with another Mountie touchdown and the Big Red entered halftime down, 20-6.
Mansfield earned a 23-point lead during the third quarter after Terrance Quaker ran in a fourth touchdown and Matt Roberts tackled Agrawal for a Mountie safety.
After the Big Red brought the ball down the field 79 yards in six plays for the last two minutes of the third quarter, freshman
Jacob Wynkoop scored Cornell's second touchdown at the top of the fourth. With a successful kick by
Ben Finkelstein, the Big Red was down, 29-13, with 12 minutes left in the game.
Mansfield's David Butler ran in two final touchdowns to earn the 44-13 win.
Junior JR Quinones led the team with seven yards on the ground while freshman
Luke Verzella led with 76 yards on five receptions.
Sophomore
Harrison Nicholas led the team with eight tackles, while junior
Julian Iacovelli and sophomore
Matthew Luebke each had one sack. Finally, junior
Seth Henks and senior
Collin Stockton forced one fumble each.
The Big Red will be back in action next week as it hosts Navy for its final home game of 2019. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, October 25.
