ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior defenseman
Jaime Bourbonnais and sophomore forward
Gillis Frechette each had four-point nights, and junior forward
Maddie Mills scored two goals of her own in the Cornell women's hockey team's blistering 6-0 victory of Robert Morris on Friday night at Lynah Rink.
Cornell (1-0) scored four goals in a 10-minute span early in the third period to blow the game open, and sophomore goaltender
Lindsay Browning needed to make just 19 saves for her second collegiate shutout. Six different players had multiple points for the Big Red, which entered the weekend ranked fifth in the nation in the USCHO.com poll. Robert Morris (2-4-1), which is ranked eighth, returns for a rematch at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lynah Rink.
"The key is understanding it's just one game," head coach
Doug Derraugh '91 said. "Robert Morris is a good team. I expect a different mind set from them tomorrow, and their players will be hungry for revenge."
The teams got off a fairly mundane start before the Big Red started to take over before the first intermission. Bourbonnais beat her defenseman wide on the rush before having her shot stopped at the 11:25 mark of the opening frame, then senior forward
Amy Curlew's one-timer about 30 seconds later was also kicked away by RMU's Raygan Kirk. From that point until early in the second period, Cornell had 12 consecutive shots on goal without any counters from Robert Morris.
Senior forward
Paige Lewis finally broke through with just 2:29 left in the first. Cutting down the middle, Lewis took a feed from Frechette for a mini-break, then lifted a backhand by Kirk's right arm. Junior defenseman
Devon Facchinato drew the second assist.
After needing to make just four saves in the opening 20 minutes, Browning was called into action early in the second to keep Cornell in front. Perhaps her best save of the night came on a one-timer by Jaycee Gebhard. The Big Red responded by doubling its lead 30 seconds later after a dominating shift in the offensive zone led to Mills' strike. Bourbonnais had the original chance as she skated into the right circle, but her shot deflected off a stick in front. Mills was free on the back post to stuff in the rebound.
While Cornell missed an opportunity to extend the lead with a full two-minute five-on-three power play, it put to bed the game quickly with four goals in the final frame. Senior forward
Kristin O'Neill tapped in a pretty net-front passing play for the third goal inside the final frame's first minute, then Bourbonnais' goal less than three minutes later essentially put the game out of reach. Mills and Frechette tacked on the last two goals just 39 seconds apart.
The Big Red penalty kill was also a perfect 7-for-7 on the night, including a Robert Morris two-man advantage during the third period.
"Overall, it was a good start for us against a quality opponent," Derraugh said.
