ITHACA, N.Y. - Sophomore
Claire Jones notched two goals and two assists to lead the Big Red field hockey team to a 4-0 victory against Brown on Saturday afternoon.
Jones scored the first goal of the game in the ninth minute of the first quarter. With assists by sophomore
Kate MacGillis and junior
Taylor Gladd, Jones took the first shot on a penalty corner for a Big Red goal. As Brown gained more possession time in the final five minutes, the Cornell defense held strong for a Big Red 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Just one shot was made during the second quarter for a period with a lot of midfield play. Both teams' offense and defense worked hard to put the ball in the net, but it was Cornell getting the second-quarter goal on the lone shot. A loose ball by the Bears led to a fast break, and 50-yard run, by Jones. Once past the 25 yard-line, Jones passed the ball to junior
Grace Royer for a quick dodge to move the goalie and a Cornell goal. The Big Red entered halftime with a 2-0 edge.
Cornell scored its third goal in the fifth minute of the second half. Jones took a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner and Brown's goalie rebounded the ball straight to Gladd. After gaining control of the ball, Gladd passed it to Jones for a redirection into the net. Cornell went into the final quarter-break with a 3-0 lead.
For the final quarter, Cornell exploded once again. Sophomore
Avery Smith scored a goal for the Big Red after just two minutes of play in the fourth quarter. Jones took a shot from the top of the circle, during a corner, and as it went slightly wide Smith tipped the ball past the Brown goalie for a Cornell score.
Cornell held the 13-9 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red also held the 8-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior goalie
Maddie Henry made four saves against Brown.
The field hockey team will travel to play #22 Syracuse tomorrow, October 27, for a 2 p.m. contest.
