SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman
Bridget Mahoney scored a goal for Cornell but it was not enough as the Big Red fell, 3-1, to Syracuse field hockey, Sunday afternoon.
The Orange opened the game with a penalty stroke goal by Carolin Hoffman in the fourth minute. At 11:16, Syracuse furthered its lead with a second goal by Stephanie Harris. Cornell was unable to answer either goal during the remaining four minutes of the first quarter and entered the first two-minute break down, 2-0.
The Big Red came back from the break with a fire for its best quarter of the game. Less than a minute into the second quarter, the Cornell scored a goal of its own. After being awarded a penalty corner, sophomore
Claire Jones took a shot from the top of the circle that went straight to Mahoney's stick for a Cornell tip. With a penalty corner goal, the Big Red decreased the Orange's lead to one goal as it entered halftime down, 2-1.
Syracuse came back from the intermission wanting to get its two-goal lead back. With 6:02 on the third-quarter clock, Sarah Luby scored the Orange's third, and final, goal. The Cornell field hockey team worked hard for the remaining 20 minutes of the game but it was not able to score a second goal.
Syracuse held the 19-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. The Orange also held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Senior goalie
Maddie Henry made seven saves to keep the Orange to a two-goal game.
The Big Red field hockey team will return to action as it travels to Princeton for an Ivy League matchup at noon on November 3.
