PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell volleyball team (10-2, 3-0) took care of business against Princeton (6-6, 2-1) Saturday evening, stifling the Tigers, 3-1 (26-24, 14-25, 28-26, 25-21), and giving the Big Red its eighth straight victory.
With tonight's win over Princeton, the Big Red is not only off to a 3-0 Ivy League start, but has notched its longest win streak since the 2006 season when Cornell won nine consecutive games.
Jillienne Bennett had herself a weekend, leading the team in kills for the second straight match. Bennett registered a team-high 15 kills to go along with a .379 hitting percentage, one solo block, and one block assist. Avery Hanan (11) and Madison Baptiste (10) were also a huge reason for Cornell's success over the course of the weekend, both notching double-digit kills in tonight's contest. Joanna Chang and Jada Stackhouse chipped in nine kills apiece to further diversify the Big Red attack.
Emma Worthington and Zoe Chamness continue to bring the best out of the Cornell attackers, notching 28 and 20 assists, respectively, on the evening. The pair also makes the most out of its serving opportunities, each notching at least one ace for the second straight match. Lily Barber had two service aces of her own in addition to her team-high 21 digs.
Fueled by a combined five kills from Stackhouse and Samanta Arenas, Cornell opened set one with a 7-4 lead. Princeton quickly came roaring back, scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take a 15-10 lead. A pair of Hanan kills and a Baptiste kill slowed Princeton's momentum and stopped its run, bringing Cornell to within one at 15-14.
Princeton would take a timeout to get back on track, scoring the next three points to extend its lead to 18-14. Cornell once again responded, and the Big Red were back to within one at 18-17 after kills from Stackhouse and Hanan. Princeton would score three of the next four points to go back up, 21-18, but after a pair of Bennett kills and a Phelps kill, Cornell was only down by one, 22-21. A Stackhouse kill and Worthington service ace evened the score up at 23-23, and Cornell persevered. Kills from Baptiste and Arenas on the final two points of the set sealed the deal for the Big Red, who took set one, 26-24.
Princeton got out to an 8-3 start in set two, and despite five different Big Red players notching at least one kill during the set, the Tigers were too much to handle. Princeton took the second set, 25-14, but this did not phase the Big Red.
The opening points of the third set were very back and forth, and were indicative of what was to come as the set progressed. Princeton seemed to hold a slight advantage in the early going, but with the score at 6-6, Baptiste and Bennett stepped up, each registering a kill and helping boost the Cornell lead to 8-6. Baptiste continued to come up big in the third, registering three kills in the first half of the set and helping Cornell maintain a 10-8 advantage.
However, Princeton came alive, scoring six of the eight points to take a 14-12 lead. Cornell responded with a run of its own, scoring the next three points on a Chamness service ace, Chang kill, and Princeton error to claim a 15-14 advantage.
Princeton took a timeout, but this did not slow down the Big Red. After a pair of Bennett kills and a Chang kill, Cornell maintained an 18-16 lead. Princeton would not go away, scoring three of the next four points to tie the game at 19-19. Multiple Big Red student-athletes got involved down the stretch, as Worthington, Hanan, Chang, and Chamness all recorded kills to give Cornell a 24-23 lead. Both teams would take timeouts to try and stop the other as the set continued, but Baptiste and Chang both registered clutch kills when the Big Red needed it most, Cornell would win set three, 28-26.
Cornell could taste victory in the fourth set, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage highlighted by a Bennett kill, Stackhouse kill, and Barber service ace. Princeton continued to knock on the door, and with the score at 15-13 in favor of Cornell, the Tigers took a timeout to regroup. Out of the break, Cornell scored three of the next four points to extend lead to 18-14, never looking back. Capped off by a Stackhouse kill, Cornell rolled to a 25-21 set four and a 3-1 match victory.
The Big Red volleyball team will be back in action next weekend when it returns home to host a pair of Ivy League contests against Dartmouth and Harvard on Oct. 11-12 at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y.
