ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's basketball team appeared well on its way to taking down unbeaten Colgate, but its turnovers proved costly down the stretch, leaving the door open for the Raiders to come back and secure a 62-58 victory over the Big Red on Thursday evening at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y.
Colgate capitalized on multiple Cornell miscues, scoring 33 points off of 29 Big Red turnovers to rally past Cornell. The Raiders trailed by as many as 17 points early in the second half, took the lead with two minutes remaining, and held on to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Big Red dropped to 1-2 after falling in its home opener.
Cornell cruised in the first half, building up momentum that resulted in a 14-3 run over the last five minutes of the second quarter, including an 8-0 run in the closing minutes before the half. The Big Red run in the first half saw four different players score, as
Samantha Widmann,
Shannon Mulroy,
Laura Bagwell-Katalinich, and
Samantha Will all put points on the board. Mulroy and Will knocked down big threes, and Widmann made Colgate pay, scoring eight points, including six off of two three-point plays.
However, with as much success as Cornell had in the first half, Colgate came out of the locker room on a mission, outscoring the Big Red 19-7 in the third quarter and cutting Cornell's lead to three at 46-43. With the Raiders in striking distance, Colgate took advantage of the opportunity, gaining its first lead of the game at the 2:55 mark in the fourth quarter on a Tegan Graham jumper.
Kate Sramac responded, putting the Big Red back on top, 56-55, after a critical three-point basket with 1:36 remaining. It was Colgate's Haley Greer who hit the biggest shot of the game, as she hit a three of her own several possessions later to give the Raiders a 58-56 lead that it would never relinquish. Greer, along with teammate Nia Ahart, knocked down four crucial free throws in the final minute to seal the 62-58 victory for Colgate and help the team stay unbeaten.
Cornell's Bagwell-Katalinich recorded her second-consecutive double-double in the loss, notching 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two assists and a steal. Widmann finished the contest with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds, in addition to three assists and one block.
The Big Red dominated the glass, holding a 47-34 rebounding edge over the Raiders.
Halley Miklos was a big reason why, corralling nine rebounds. Mulroy,
Dylan Higgins, and
Kate Sramac each contributed to Cornell's offensive effort, as Mulroy tallied nine points and both Higgins and Sramac had six.
Colgate's Rachel Thompson (21 points, 14 rebounds, six steals, five assists) lead three in double figures for Raiders, who remained unbeaten on the young season.
The Big Red will look to bounce back when it returns to Newman Arena for a matchup against NJIT on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
