Becker Carries Volleyball to Sweep of Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior right side hitter Paige Becker was feeling it on Friday night, recording a match-high and season-best 10 kills and carrying the Cornell volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) victory over Harvard at the Malkin Athletics Center in Cambridge, Mass.

With the victory, the Big Red secured a season sweep of the Crimson for the second-consecutive year, marking the first time since the 2007 and 2008 seasons that Cornell has won both matchups against Harvard in back-to-back years. The win was also the 11th 3-0 victory for the Big Red this season.

Becker read the Harvard defense beautifully all night, finding the holes in the Crimson defense and attacking them all evening. She made Harvard pay on her cross-court attack, collecting 10 kills to go along with a .318 hitting percentage, also contributing three digs and a block assist.

Despite Becker's dominance, the Big Red attack remained balanced, as Jada Stackhouse (6), Avery Hanan (5), Joanna Chang (5), and Lauren Stubbs (5) all recorded at least a handful of kills. Stackhouse and Hanan also found success at the net, recording three block assists a piece. Chang defended well from the back row, tallying seven digs.

As a team, the Big Red out-hit the Crimson .261 to .087 for the match. Emma Worthington and Zoe Chamness helped Cornell top Harvard in the assists category as well, as the Big Red notched 40 assists as compared to the Crimson's 25. Chamness and Worthington notched 18 and 14 assists, respectively.

Madison Baptiste and Lily Barber held down Cornell's back row, as Baptiste collected a match-high and season-best 14 digs, while Barber added 12. Barber's biggest impact came from the serving line, where she notched three service aces, including back-to-back aces in the opening points of the first set. Chang also served well, recording three service aces of her own, two of them coming on consecutive points in the third set.

After Harvard scored the first two points of the first set, Cornell scored the next seven points to take a 7-2 advantage. Multiple Harvard errors contributed to the run, but it was a result of Barber keeping the Crimson off balance after recording back-to-back service aces. After taking a timeout to regroup, the Crimson stormed back to tie things up at 9-9 and eventually take a 12-10 lead. Cornell kept its composure, scoring the next three points and regaining a 13-12 advantage after a Hanan kill.

The set quickly became a back and forth battle, with both teams trading points over the next few series. Three-straight Harvard aces gave the Crimson a 17-14 lead, forcing a Cornell timeout. Cornell once again responded, putting together a 5-0 run to go up 20-18. The Crimson weren't done, however, as Harvard went on a mini 3-0 run of its own to take back the lead, 21-20. With things knotted up at 23-23, a Harvard serving error opened the door for Jenna Phelps and Hanan to secure a block on the next play, guiding Cornell to a 25-23 set one victory.

Harvard bounced back quickly from its first set loss, scoring four of the first five points to take an early 4-1 lead. It was then that Cornell notched a 4-0 scoring run of its own, finding itself with a 7-6 advantage. The second set quickly became the Paige Becker show, as she recorded three kills in a four-point series to give the Big Red a 10-8 lead. Harvard got itself back in the set at the serving line, and in part to three-straight aces, the Crimson went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. After a Cornell timeout, Harvard's momentum fizzled out as quickly as it built up, and the Big Red scored 15 of the final 19 points of the set to claim the set two victory, 25-19. Becker notched six kills in the second frame, helping Cornell take a 2-0 series lead.

Cornell cruised in the third set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Following a Becker kill and a Phelps block, the Crimson took a timeout with the score at 10-4 to try and stop the bleeding. Becker had other plans, however, notching her 10th kill of the match out of the timeout to maintain the Cornell lead. The Big Red rolled to a 25-15 set three victory, and a 3-0 win for the match.

The Big Red will play its final match of the season tomorrow against Dartmouth at 5 p.m. at Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H.
