Men's Hoops Falls To Navy, 72-61

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Jimmy Boeheim recorded his second consecutive double-double, but a couple of quick first half runs put the Big Red in a hole it couldn't climb out of in a 72-61 loss at Navy on Tuesday evening at Alumni Hall. The loss dropped Cornell to 1-6, while Navy evened its record at 3-3.

Boeheim had 18 points, 11 rebounds and three assists, all teams highs, while Terrance McBride chipped in 12 points and five rebounds to lead the Big Red. Cornell fell behind by as many as 20 points early in the second half, made a run by its bench to get within eight with 6:30 to play, but couldn't get any closer. Freshman Greg Dolan had eight points, three rebounds and two assists and Kobe Dickson notched six points and seven rebounds. Freshman Jordan Jones, making his first collegiate start, had seven points.

The Navy backcourt of John Carter Jr. amd Cam Davis each scored 24 points and Greg Summers added 12 points and 12 rebounds as the starting backcourt had 60 of the Midshipmen's 72 points. The home team held a 36-29 edge on the backboards, including 18-9 in the decisive first half.

First Half

• Separate Navy runs of 9-2, 8-0, 7-0 and 6-0 pushed the home team out to a 13-point lead at the break (42-29).
• The Midshipmen led by as many as 16 points twice in the first 20 minutes.
• Only 10 points and five rebounds from Boeheim kept the Big Red afloat, as Navy shot 58 percent from the floor in the half and outrebounded Cornell 18-9.
• Carter Jr. (16) and Davis (14) combined to shoot 10-of-15 from the floor, while Sean Yoder was credited with five rebounds and five assists.
• McBride added seven first half points, combining with Boeheim to shoot 7-of-14 from the floor.
• A McBride 3-pointer got Cornell within 23-18 midway through the first, but Davis drained a trey on the other end to trigger a 7-0 run that pushed the lead to double figures.
• Cornell got no closer than 10 the rest of the half.

Second Half

• Navy extended its lead to 20 in the opening minutes of the second half (51-31) before Cornell started chipping into the lead.
• A 3-pointer by the Big Red's Dolan, just 71 seconds after hitting his first collegiate basket, made it an eight-point game (58-50) with 8:42 remaining.
• Cornell kept it in that range for the next several minutes, twice more getting within eight - on a ferocious dunk, and later two made free throws, by Boeheim.
• After both Boeheim scores, Cam Davis answered, the second time with a 3-pointer.
• Carter Jr. added a 3-pointer to Davis' to extend the lead back to 68-54 with under five minutes to play.
• Cornell couldn't close to less than the final margin of 11 points.
