Big Red Fencing Sweeps Competition at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. - Led by a strong performance from the foil squad, the Big Red fencing team swept its competition on Sunday, Dec. 1, finishing a spotless 5-0 at the Brandeis Fencing Invitational. Cornell defeated Brandeis, Wellesley, MIT, Boston College and Incarnate Word and finished the day with a combined individual record of 104-31. Big Red foils finished 37-8 overall, while the saber squad finished 35-10 and the epees went 32-13.

With five wins on Sunday, Cornell now owns an overall season record of 9-2 and currently boasts eight consecutive victories. Updated season records can be viewed here.
 
Cornell opened the day with a dominant 22-5 victory over host Brandeis in round one. Facing head coach Ariana Klinkov's former team, Wellesley College, in round two, the Big Red came away victorious by a final score of 19-8. Round three brought Cornell a 22-5 win over MIT before the day was rounded out with victories over Boston College, 18-9, and Incarnate Word, 23-4.

Leading the Big Red in individual victories were Marissa Viqueira (9-2) and Gabrielle Hill (9-3), who each finished the day with nine wins. It was the season debut for Viqueira who missed competition at the Penn Elite Invitational due to injury. Madeleine Nishimura (8-1) and Ying Cao (8-0) came close to matching the team-high with eight wins apiece, and Emily Gao (7-3), Megan Eno (7-2), Yoanna Efimova (7-2), Marigot Fackenthal (7-2) and Esther Bentolila (7-1) all finished their days with seven wins. Several members of the Cornell team were undefeated with Cao, Grace Ding (6-0) and Caroline Lee (6-0) all finishing competition at Brandeis with unblemished records.

In total 15 members of the Cornell team finished the day with records above the .500 mark. Also posting winning records were Jordan Rusoff, Amit Handari-Levy, Kristen Wong and Gillian Harrill.

Up Next: Cornell fencing is out of commission until next semester when the team picks things back up at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn in the TSE Center on Saturday, Jan. 18.
