NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman
Maria Adiaconitei teamed with sophomore
Ana Elhom to win in doubles, and then won her singles match, but the women's tennis team was defeated by Harvard, 4-1, in the seventh-place match on Sunday morning at the ECAC Indoor Championships at Heyman-Cullman Tennis Center.
Cornell (2-6), which was the eighth seed at the tournament, won its first doubles match of the weekend when Adiaconitei and Elhom defeated their opponents, 6-4, at the No. 3 position. That left the balance of the opening point on the No. 1 position, where Harvard (6-3) pulled out a close 7-5 decision.
Singles also moved fairly quickly, with the top four matches all decided fairly definitively in straight sets. That included Adiaconitei's third victory of the season via 6-3, 6-1 decision at the No. 3 spot.
Though the Crimson was able to clinch the matches with victories in the other spots in the top four, the Big Red was in good shape in the remaining matches. Elhom was one game away from closing out her match at No. 6, and freshman
Sarah Campbell was up 4-1 in the second set with an eye toward forcing a third at No. 5.
Cornell continues its non-league schedule with a match against Colorado at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, New York.
