NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Just four weeks after suffering a narrow loss to Western Ontario, the men's squash team got its revenge on Saturday with a 7-2 upset victory against the Mustangs in the consolation semifinals of the Hoehn Cup at Brady Squash Center.
Cornell (5-12), which entered the weekend's 'B' Division of the College Squash Association National Championships seeded sixth in the bracket and ranked 14th nationally, is now guaranteed a better finish than it had at the event a season ago. The Big Red will take on No. 16 Franklin & Marshall in the 13th-place match at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
Saturday's match started with freshman Nicholas Göth Errington breezing to a three-game victory at No. 6. Senior
Jared Scherl then clawed out a win in five games at No. 9, his sixth victory in his last seven matches, to give Cornell a 2-1 lead after the opening rotation.
Western Ontario (7-4), which entered the weekend ranked 10th by the CSA before suffering an upset loss to No. 15 George Washington in Friday's quarterfinals, looked to be gaining some traction early in the next wave. But Cornell freshman
Charles Culhane fought off a handful of match balls en route to winning his second game at No. 2. Meanwhile, sophomore
Illia Presman outlasted his opponent in the third game at No. 5 before an eventual victory in the fourth.
Culhane closed out his win in four to push Cornell's lead to 4-1, then freshman
Nikhil Arjunan Iyer rallied to win in four at No. 8 to clinch. Freshman
Alex Dworetzky (No. 4) and senior
Andy Muran (No. 1) then tacked on points with three-game victories.
