Softball Swept In 2019 Opener In Florida

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- Early pitching duals didn't hold in Cornell softball's first day outside, dropping a pair of contests to open day one of the 2019 Madeira Beach Invitational on Friday afternoon. Cornell fell to Siena 10-2 in six innings before dropping a 6-0 contest to South Dakota.

Game One
Erin Rockstroh drove in a pair of runs, but Siena broke open a 1-0 pitcher's duel with three runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to race to victory in the season opener for both teams.

Rockstroh and Emily McKinney each had doubles while five different Cornell players had one hit apiece. Freshman Hanna Crist was 1-for-2 with a walk, while both Sarah Murray and Miranda Lawson scored a run.

Katie Lew gave up four runs, all unearned, to take the hard-luck loss in the circle. She struck out four. Ashley Delany also made her collegiate debut in relief, striking out two in two innings of work.

Siena's Patricia Kalesse was 3-for-4 and had the big blow, a three-run homer, in the fifth frame. Siena had 11 hits on the afternoon and that was enough for the tandem of Maddie McMahon (5.0 innings, four hits, two runs, six strikeouts) and Sarah Dowalo (1.0 innings, one hit, one strikeout).

Game Two
Dustie Durham threw a six-hit shutout as South Dakota improved to 9-3 on the season with a 6-0 triumph over the Big Red.

The Coyotes scored two in the fifth to take the lead and added a run in the sixth and three insurance runs in the seventh to drop the Big Red to 0-2 on the season.

Freshman Allison Kerce was 2-for-3 at the plate and four other Big Red players had hits in a cleanly-played game. Lisa Nelson went the distance in the circle for Cornell, allowing eight hits and all six runs.

Jamie Holscher went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Lauren Eamiguel blasted a three-run home run in the seventh inning in support of Durham.
