PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Cornell swimming and diving team moved into sole possession of seventh place and posted seven swims that rank among the fastest in school history as day two of the 2019 Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championships winded down at Brown's Katherine Moran Aquatics Center. The Big Red has accumulated 234 team point midway through the four-day meet.
Cornell's first scorer of the day was
Jordan Blitz with a 22nd place effort in the 500 free, touching in 4:28.10 in the prelims, good for No. 6 all-time at Cornell. Both
Van Cates (22nd, 1:48.60) and
Min Zhi Chua (24th, 1:48.94) also scored in the C final of the 200 IM. Cates now ranks No. 6 all-time at Cornell, while Chua is right behind in seventh.
Mahoney went 19.70 to take sixth overall in the 50 free, becoming just the third Big Red swimmer to break 20 seconds. His time is just .03 off
Jack Brenneman's record time of 19.67 at the 2016 Ivy Championships. He was joined by
Dylan Curtis at 16th (20.31) and
Rob Lincoln in 21st (20.42).
Both Brett Hebert (fifth, 292.10) and
Jameson Crandell (eighth, 259.00) placed in the A final on the 1-meter diving board. Hebert's score is the second-highest in school history - behind only Phil Truong's 317.25 at the 2013 Ivy meet.
The Big Red closed the day with the quartet of Mahoney, Lincoln, Curtis and
Cyrus Morrison placing seventh in the 200 free relay in 1:19.99. That is the fifth-fastest swim in school history.
Cornell will attempt to qualify more swimmers for finals in Friday's preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m.
