PRINCETON, N.J. – The women's tennis team will get a first-hand look at all its Ivy League competition this weekend, when it competes in the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Yale. All three of Cornell's matches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Cornell (2-3) is coming off a 7-0 loss to Penn State on Sunday after rolling to victories over Army West Point and Binghamton the weekend prior. One of five freshmen on the roster of seven,
Valerie Ho leads the team in singles with a 3-2 record from the Nos. 4 and 5 positions.
This year's ECAC Indoor Championships are exclusively the eight Ivy League programs. The Big Red has been seeded eighth, meaning it will open up at 8 a.m. Friday against top-seeded Princeton. The Tigers are off to a 3-2 start this spring, starting with a victory over Michigan State in the UNC regional of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Princeton then headed west for three matches, with victories against Santa Clara and San Francisco bookended a 7-0 loss to national No. 1 Stanford. No players from Princeton hold current Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, but Stephanie Schrage was tabbed 67th in singles during the fall.
While Cornell has just four victories in 41 all-time meetings with Princeton, two of them came just two years ago – including a 4-2 win on the final day of the 2017 ECAC Indoor Championships. After defeating Princeton in Ivy League play, Cornell went on to win its first Ivy League title later that year.
Cornell will move on to play either fourth-seeded Brown or fifth-seeded Dartmouth on Saturday, either at 2 p.m. after a win or 8 a.m. after a loss. The quarterfinals on the other side of the bracket pit second-seeded Columbia against seventh-seeded Yale and third-seeded Harvard and sixth-seeded Penn. Sunday's possible match times are 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. or 5 p.m.
