Morgan Goes For 41 Points, Big Red Tops Dartmouth 83-80

HANOVER, N.H. -- Senior Matt Morgan became the first Cornell player in nearly 60 years to score 40 points in a game as the Big Red stole an Ivy League road win with an 83-80 victory over Dartmouth on Friday evening at Leede Arena. His 41 points set a career high and an arena record as the Big Red improved to 11-10 (3-2 Ivy) with the victory. Dartmouth slipped to 10-11 (1-4 Ivy) with the narrow loss.

Morgan not only reached the 40-point mark for the first time in his career, but also became the first Cornell player to hit that plateau since George Farley hit for a school-record 47 points against Princeton on March 5, 1960 - nearly 59 years ago. The nine 3-pointers matched the school record for the second time in the last month on the road. He scored more than 20 points in both halves and shot 13-of-18 overall and 9-of-11 from beyond the arc. He added four rebounds and three steals in the victory.

Morgan was sensational, but Josh Warren's 4-of-4 shooting in the final 20 seconds allowed the Big Red to escape with the win. He netted 15 points with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jimmy Boeheim had nine points and four rebounds, and Steven Julian notched four points, four rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. Cornell shot 54 percent from the floor overall, connected on 10-of-16 3-pointers and was 15-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Chris Knight had a career-high 27 points and added five assists, four rebounds and four blocks in the loss. Brendan Barry (12), Aaryn Rai (11), Ian Sistare (10) and Taurus Samuels (10) rounded out five double figure scorers. The Big Green shot 54 percent overall.

KEY POINT, PART 1
• Trailing 31-28 with 3:27 to play, Morgan was fouled hitting a 3-pointer and hit all three charity shots to tie the score.
• Brendan Barry nailed a trey on the other end to regain the lead, but Morgan then drained three straight 3-pointers in a span of 79 seconds to force a timeout with under a minute to play in the half.
• The 40-34 lead was one it would never relinquish, though Dartmouth did tie it in the second half.

KEY POINT, PART 2
• The Big Green cut the Big Red lead to three twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and both times Morgan answered with a 3-pointer to double the lead.
The senior then hit big shots late - scoring four in a row after Dartmouth got within 68-66 with 5:26 remaining; draining a shot beyond the arc when the Big Green tied it at 70-70; converting a four-point play when Dartmouth got within 73-72 with four minutes left; getting a layup to fall when Dartmouth got within 77-76 with a minute to play..

NOTES TO KNOW
• Morgan's 41-point day was the fourth 40-point game in school history and surpassed his career high of 38 points, reached twice.
• His nine 3-point field goals made tied his own school record, a mark also reached in games by Ryan Wittman and Alex Compton.
• Cornell had recorded 1,570 games since a Big Red player passed the 40-point mark.
• Morgan reached the 500-point mark for the fourth straight year, ending the night with 501 points this season - he has four of the 11 500-point seasons in school history.
• Morgan also hit double figures for the 100th time in his career and the 72nd straight - good for 21st in NCAA history.
• The Big Red is 6-0 this season when scoring 80 points.
• Cornell is 9-7 in its last 16 Ivy League games dating back to last year.
• Cornell has won five straight against the Big Green.
• The team is 5-2 in seven games since moving Jimmy Boeheim and Joel Davis into the starting lineup.

NEXT UP
• Cornell will head to Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. for its first meeting of the season with the Crimson.
• The two teams met three times a year ago, including in the semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament, with the Crimson winning all three matchups.
• Though Harvard has won six in a row and 15 of the last 17 meetings between the teams, five of those contests were decided by a single possession or in overtime.
