ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell won 9-of-10 matches and cruised to a 40-3 win over Penn on Friday evening at Friedman Wrestling Center. The victory, coming against the last Ivy team to hand the Big Red a dual meet loss all the way back in 2002, extended Cornell's league win streak to 87 matches and sets up a Saturday afternoon showdown with No. 19 Princeton for the Ivy title. The home team improved to 10-2 (4-0 Ivy), while the Quakers fell to 3-6 (2-1 Ivy).
The Big Red earned a pair of win by fall and three more by tech fall, while also winning three matches by a takedown or less. The win was Cornell's 17th consecutive over the Quakers.
Cornell led 13-0 after three matches, with
Vitali Arujau needing a takedown in the final seconds to clinch his tech fall at 125, and Diakomihalis putting away his in the first period at 141. The two have combined to go 34-1, with the lone loss by Arujau to teammate
Chas Tucker, who earned a 3-2 triumph at 133.
Adam Santoro picked up a second period fall at 157 to improve to 13-6, and Andrew Berryesa squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Evan DeLuis at 165.
Brandon Womack needed just 60 seconds to put Jake Hendricks to the mat for a fall and both
Ben Honis and
Jeramy Sweany put away wins to start senior weekend.
Jake Taylor slotted in at 184 and picked up a decisive 12-3 victory over Robert Ng to wrap up the Big Red's win.
The lone loss of the day was a 3-1 sudden victory win for Penn's 13th-ranked Anthony Artalona over
Jonathan Furnas at 149 pounds. After trading escapes in regulation, Artalona scored midway through the first sudden victory period for Penn's only win of the day.
Cornell and No. 19 Princeton will meet for an Ivy title for the fourth consecutive year, with Cornell looking for its 17th consecutive league title and 40th overall. The two teams will square off at 1 p.m. at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
