Big Red Takes Seventh At Ivy Meet, Another Record Falls

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Cornell head coach Wes Newman saw a second of his own school records fall, but couldn't have been happier about it as the Big Red men took seventh at the 2019 Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving meet on Saturday evening at Brown's Katherine Moran Aquatics Center. The Big Red finished with 701.5 team points, well ahead of eighth-place Dartmouth (425.5).

Jack Mahoney qualified for the B final in the 100 free with a school-record 43.83 time, erasing a mark set by Newman (43.91). On Friday, Mahoney topped Newman's record in the 100 butterfly. Cyrus Morrison (44.76) also made the C final in the event.

The evening session kicked off with the mile, and Jake Lawson took 15th in 15:35.21 (No. 6 all-time at Cornell), four spots ahead of Jordan Blitz (15:39.66 - No. 7 all-time at Cornell).

Cates qualified for the A final in the 200 back, posting the seventh-fastest time in the prelims and going 1:46.99 to take eighth overall. Ricardo Martinez (11th, 1:47.15 - No. 8 all-time at Cornell), Jacob Mullin (18th, 1:48.36), Will Hrabchak (19th, 1:48.50), and Jake Lawson (21st, 1:49.89) also scored in the event.

Ryan Brown touched in 2:00.41 in the 200 breast prelims before taking 15th overall, while Slater Goodman (21st, 2:00.86) and Owen Downs (22nd, 2:01.58) also scoring in the event.

James Huang was narrowly held off for the final spot in the A final after posting a 1:46.14 in the 200 fly, the third-fastest time in school history and good for a win in the B final. Teammates Ian Russiello (20th, 1:49.30) and Min Zhi Chua (23rd, 1:50.47) also added team points with their C final finish.

The Big Red had three divers score in the B final, with Jameson Crandell (11th, 297.20 - No. 6 all-time at Cornell), Brett Hebert (13th, 295.45 - No. 7 all-time at Cornell) and Jesse Potts (220.50) all placing in the top 16.

Cornell closed the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 400 free relay, with Mahoney, Morrison, Dylan Curtis and Rob Lincoln touching in 2:59.14. That time squeezed into the top 10 on the school's career list.
