PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A pair of school records fell to the wayside as Cornell continued to rewrite the record book on day three of the 2019 Ivy League Men's Swimming & Diving Championship at Brown's Katherine Moran Aquatics Center on Friday evening, The Big Reed solidified its hold on seventh place and now have 479.5 points heading into the meet's final day.
Ian Russiello earned a top 10 finish in the 400 IM, breaking a nine-year-old school record with a time of 3:52.26. That shaved .68 seconds off
Dean Holcomb's 2010 mark.
Ricardo Martinez placed 18th overall in 3:54.34, good for No. 4 in school history.
Owen Downs was 21st in the event in 3:57.14.
Jack Mahoney was the first A finalist of the night, taking seventh overall in the 100 fly. He touched the wall in 47.11, erasing a decade-old record held by current Big Red head coach Wes Newman.
James Huang placed 11th in 48.00, No. 5 in Cornell history, and
Jacob Mullin also scored in 22nd (49.11).
Jordan Blitz was the team's top finisher in the 1,000 free (9:14.84), one spot ahead of fellow freshman
Jake Lawson (9:17.09). Blitz's time ranks No. 5 all-time at Cornell, with Lawson slotting in seventh.
Koppi Kolyvek made the B final in the 200 free (1:38.89), while
Cyrus Morrison (1:41.07) and
Min Zhi Chua (1:41.10) touched near-simultaneously in the C final.
Ryan Brown won the B final of the 100 breast in 54.00, a mark that would have finished fourth in the A final and that ranks as the third-fastest in Big Red history.
Slater Goodman (15th, 55.88) and Downs (18th, 56.27) earned points for Cornell as well.
Dylan Curtis took fourth overall in the 100 back in a time of 47.65 in the finals, going 47.34 in the prelims - lowering his own mark that is second in Big Red history. Will Hrabchak (10th, 48.72 - No. 6 all-time at Cornell),
Jacob Mullin (21st, 49.92) and
Van Cates (22nd, 50.04) also reached finals.
The 400 medley relay squad consisting of Curtis, Brown, Huang and Mahoney finished seventh in 3:14.94, the ninth-fastest swim in school history.
