Defense Drives Women's Hoops To Win Over Brown, Weekend Sweep

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's basketball team limited Brown to under 40 percent shooting in all four quarters and dominated the paint in a 66-48 win over the Bears on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. Cornell earned its first season-sweep of Brown since the 2013-14 season and stays squarely in the race for the fourth and final Ivy League playoff spot while improving to 11-12 (5-7 Ivy).

Laura Bagwell-Katalinich reached 20 points in her fourth consecutive game and finished with eight rebounds, while Samantha Widmann had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Dylan Higgins also notched 10 points, six boards and a team-high three steals. Playing in her final regular season game at Newman Arena, Samantha Clement had nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the win.

Brown (9-19, 1-11 Ivy) was led by Justine Gaziano and Erika Steeves 15 and 13 points, respectively, but no other Bear registered more than eight points. Steeves also had a team-high seven rebounds.

With just 48 points on the night, the Bears' high-powered offense was held to 22 points below its season average as Cornell held the visitors to 32 percent shooting overall and just 26.7 percent from 3-point range. Cornell forced 21 Brown turnovers with 12 steals and dominated the boards with a 46-28 advantage in rebounding.

The Big Red controlled every aspect of the game, outscoring Brown in the paint (42-19), off turnovers (25-17), in second chance points (15-3), and points off the bench (20-12) as all 15 Cornell players got into the game.

Brown scored the first basket of the game, but that was about the only thing that went right for the visitors as Bagwell-Katalinich tied the game on the Big Red's next possession to open a 13-3 run. Cornell went to its senior early in the contest, as Clement accounted for seven points in the first five minutes of action as the Big Red took the 13-5 lead.

Cornell extended its lead to 12 points late in the first quarter on a traditional three-point play by Bagwell-Katalinich before a late run by the Bears cut the Big Red's lead to 22-14 at the first break.

The home team clamped down defensively, holding Brown without a point for the first 9:23 of the second quarter as it pushed its advantage to 20 points (34-14). The Bears hit consecutive treys in the final 37 seconds of the quarter, including a buzzer-beater by Gaziano, but Cornell led 34-20 at the half.

Brown fought back early in the third quarter to cut the Big Red's lead to 10 points, but a layup from Widmann ended the run and Cornell scored 13 unanswered to close the third and open the fourth, putting the game firmly out of reach.

The Big Red will play its final regular season games of the season when it travels to Harvard and Dartmouth on Friday, March 8 and Saturday March 9, respectively.
