Women's Lacrosse Downs Harvard 11-5 in Ivy-Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's lacrosse team got in the win column Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field with an 11-5 triumph over Harvard in both teams' Ivy-openers. The win puts the Big Red at 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Ivy League play. The Crimson falls to 2-2 overall and to 0-1 against league opponents.

Senior captain Sarah Phillips led the way for the Big Red with a career-high five points. She also matched her career high in goals with four on the afternoon.

The contest began with both teams exchanging goals. Harvard's Nicole Baiocco opened the scoring just under five minutes in. Almost two minutes later Grace Paletta, who made her first appearance of the season, found the back of the net to even the score. Harvard's Keeley MacAfee found the back of the net with 22:12 to give Harvard what proved to be its final lead of the game.

Cornell went on to scoring burst, netting the next seven goals. After Genevieve DeWinter evened things up with an unassisted tally with 16:37 left in the opening frame, Phillips played a part in the Big Red's next three goals. The Manhasset, New York, native found the back of the net twice and set up classmate Tomasina Leska for her second goal of the season.

Freshman Shannon Brazier closed out the half with two consecutive goals, the first of which was a free position goal with 2:14 remaining. Brazier beat the clock on her next tally, scoring with seven seconds remaining to give the Big Red the five-goal advantage heading into the half.

The second period started off slow, with no scoring in the first 10:53. Caroline Allen ended the 10-minute drought with a free position goal.

Harvard ended its 34:29 scoring drought with a MacAfee goal on a free position chance.

The Big Red responded with three-straight. The first of which came from Allen. Then, Phillips added her final two of the contest.

The Crimson closed out the game scoring its only consecutive goals of the contest.
