Trudy Vande Berg, the
Wendy Schaenen '79 Head Coach Of Volleyball, shares her thought on the Big Red volleyball team's spring campaign.
As I sit here, thinking about what to write about our 2019 spring season, the only words that come to mind are "crushed it." The team worked incredibly hard both on and off the court and the results prove it.
On April 13 the team travelled to Colgate to take on the host and Binghamton. Divided into two teams, the Big Red went 3-1 on the day with a split with Colgate and a sweep of Binghamton. The Big Red then hosted Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland on April 20 and completed a sweep of both teams to finish the spring season with a 7-1 record.
All three outsides for Cornell –
Samanta Arenas,
Lauren Stubbs,
Madison Baptiste – had stellar spring seasons as each hit over .275 and led the team with 61, 64, and 58 kills, respectively.
Jada Stackhouse led all middles with 23 kills and also had a team leading .365 hitting percentage.
Alena Madar did what she does best and led all blockers with 15 for the season.
Lily Barber,
Sophia Beaudoin and
Zoe Chamness didn't let many balls hit the floor as they led all defensive players with 61, 58, and 57 digs, respectively. Chamness was also a big part of her teammates' success at the net as her teams cumulatively hit .339 off her offerings.
As a team, the Big Red hit .261 while averaging 14.73 KPS and averaged 15.07 DPS, all improvements on the 2018 season.
Mission accomplished on all goals set in January!
The Big Red are ready to take on a tough preseason slate and a tough Ivy League season this fall!
