ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell softball team collected a season-best 15 hits in winning game one and split a doubleheader with Central New York rival Colgate on Tuesday afternoon at Niemand-Robison Field. The Big Red earned a 10-7 victory in game one before falling to the Raiders 6-0 in game two. Cornell moved to 6-25, while the Raiders are now 17-18.
Game One
Cornell scored eight runs in the second and hung out late to win the opener against the Raiders, 10-7.
THe Big Red pounded out 15 hits, all singles, with both
Bridgette Rooney and
Brianna Straley collecting three hits apiece in the win. Rooney scored twice and drove two runs in, while
Emily Muniz also had a pair of RBI. All nine position players had at least one hit.
Junior
Lisa Nelson was perfect over 2.2 innings of work in her first start in nearly a month, striking out five along the way to set the tone for the Big Red. Freshman
Ashley Delany picked up from there, scattering five hits and surrendering three runs over 3.1 innings of work to pick up her third victory of the season in the circle.
Cornell batted around in the second, taking advantage of six hits, three walks, a hit batsman and a fielder's choice to plate its eight runs, and the Raiders couldn't get all the way back despite a three-run fourth and four more in the seventh before
Katie Lew shut the door.
Game Two
Bella Crow struck out six in a complete-game, five-hit shutout and Colgate posted a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
Crow picked up her ninth win of the season, scattering five Big Red hits and surrendering one walk in a 95-pitch masterpiece.
Hanna Crist and
Brianna Straley each had doubles and
Emily McKinney,
Olivia Rooney and
Ashley Delany also had hits in the loss.
Katie Lew allowed two runs over the first four innings in the circle, but the Raiders were able to plate four in the final three innings to put the game away.
Morgan Farrah was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored twice to lead the Colgate offense. The Raiders had just seven hits of their own, but took advantage of nine Big Red free passes to scratch together single runs in the second, third, sixth and seventh.
Cornell will visit Ivy rival Columbia for a three-game set beginning on Saturday, April 13 at 12:30 p.m.
