VESTAL, N.Y. –
Adam Saks was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and the Cornell baseball team's army of nine pitchers silenced Binghamton for a 5-2 victory on Wednesday night at Bearcats Baseball Complex. The Big Red now has its first three-game winning streak of the season.
Binghamton (18-19) scraped together its two runs thanks to five walks over the first three innings, but Cornell (12-22) took the lead in the fifth inning. A pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases against sidewinding Tanner Sinicki, then Saks – who hit a walk-off triple to score two runs in Saturday's win over Penn – once again delivered the big blow. He hit the first pitch of his at-bat into left field for a base hit, but the outfielder hesitated and stumbled to allow the ball to go all the way to the wall. All three runners scored and Saks advanced to third, though the play was scored an RBI single with a two-base error.
The Big Red bullpen made the lead stand up in dominating fashion. The Bearcats only advanced a runner as far as second base twice over the final six innings, including a bloop double in the fifth. Sophomore
Trevor Daniel Davis recorded four outs to earn his first collegiate victory, and junior
John Natoli breezed through a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the year.
By that point, Cornell had tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth to give Natoli some breathing room. Freshman
Lachlan Charles worked a one-out walk, followed singles from freshman
Niko Lillios and Saks to load the bases. Senior
Josh Arndt hit a sacrifice fly to plate Charles, then Lillios scored when senior
Will Simoneit laced a double down the line in left. Saks has now reached in all 22 of his starts and Simoneit extended his hit streak to seven games.
The Big Red returns to Ivy League play one last time when it travels to Dartmouth this weekend. The series is scheduled to start with a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, then wrap up with a single game at noon Sunday. All of the games at Dartmouth are scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+.
