Fencing Announces Class of 2023

ITHACA, N.Y. – Daria Schneider has announced that seven newcomers will join the Big Red fencing team for the upcoming 2019-20 season. The class consists of three foil, two epee and two sabre fencers.
 
"We are excited to announce an incoming class that perfectly complements our disciplined, talented and thriving returners," said Schneider. "This group of fencers will be model ambassadors for our developing program and for Cornell University. We are a young team with abounding energy and potential. I am proud that we continue to bring in fantastic student-athletes from all over the country and world. There is strength in our talent and in our diversity and we are committed to the development of that strength. When our team arrives on campus in August we will hit the ground running, immersing our newcomers in our culture of grit, accountability, leadership and respect. We are confident they will learn quickly, bring all the intensity they can muster to training every day and in turn we will be a stronger, better team with each passing week. I am thrilled to welcome a new set of student-athletes and their families as they become part of the Cornell Fencing Program."

Ying Cao – Foil
(York Mills Collegiate Institute) Toronto, Ont.
Prior to Cornell
• A member of the Toronto Fencing Club.
• A member of the Canadian Cadet, and Canadian Junior National Team since 2016.
• Helped Canada to a fifth place finish in the 2019 Junior World Championships Teams Event with the highest finish ever by the Junior Women's Foil squad.
• Placed 20th at the 2018 Junior World Championships in Verona, Italy.
• Earned back-to-back medal at the Pan Am Championships, taking silver as a cadet in 2017 and bronze as a junior in 2016.
• Won a gold medal in the 2018 Cadet European Cup Teams Event and placed sixth as an individual at the 2018 Cadet European Cup in Poznan, Poland.
• Took consecutive bronze medals in the Cadet European Cup Teams Event (2015, 2016).
• Earned a bronze medal at the 2017 Junior World Cup, before a fifth place finish in the 2018 event.
• Silver medalist at the 2018 Senior Canada National Championships.
• Gold medalist at the 2016 Cadet Canada National Championships.
• Four-time gold medalist at various Canada Cup events (2019 – Senior & Junior; 2017 – Junior & Cadet).
• Placed seventh at the 2019 January NAC in Charlotte, N.C.
•Placed 14th at the 2017 Junior North American Championship.
 
Emily Gao – Epee

Prior to Cornell
• Member of the New York Fencing Academy.
• Finished ninth overall at the 2017 Cadet World Cup in Espoo, Finland.
• Placed 10th at the 2018 Cadet World Cup in Krakow, Poland.
• Earned a seventh place finish at the 2019 Junior North American Cup (Charlotte, N.C.).
• Took 11th place at the 2018 Junior Olympic National Championships.
• Finished in 14th place at the 2018 Junior North American Cup in Virginia Beach, Va.

Amit Handari-Levy – Sabre
(Walter Johnson HS) North Bethesda, Md.
Prior to Cornell
• Fenced for six years at the Capital Fencing Academy.
• Bronze medalist at the 2017 Cadet North American Cup.
• Placed 25th at the 2018 Juniors Junior Olympic.
• Took 29th place at the 2018 Junior North American Cup.
• Gold medalist at the 2017 Maccabiah Games.
• Earned bronze at the 2017 Cadet Capital Clash.
• Placed 16th at the 2017 Junior North American Cup.
• Advanced to the Top 8 at the 2016 Cadet North American Cup.
• Finished in the Top 32 at the 2016 Division 1 North American Cup.

Gabriella Hill – Epee
(DeLaSalle High School) Minneapolis, Minn.
Prior to Cornell
• Fenced for the Center for the Blade Arts (formerly Minnesota Sword Club).
• Took fifth in Women's Epee at the 2019 January NAC in Charlotte, N.C.
• Placed 10th in the Junior Women's Epee and 21st in the Cadet Women's Epee at the 2017 November North American Cup in Kansas City, Mo.
•Finished 10th at the 2018 Junior Olympics Championship in Cadet Women's Epee.
• Gold medalist in the Cadet Women's Epee and took eighth overall in the Junior Women's Epee at the 2017 Junior Olympics Championship.
• Bronze medalist in the Cadet Women's Epee at the 2016 November NAC in Kansas City, Mo.
• Took 27th place in the Junior Women's Epee at the 2018 November NAC in Kansas City, Mo.
• Four-time Minnesota State High School Champion (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).
 
Maddy Limb – Sabre
(Rockland Academy) Northridge, Calif.
Prior to Cornell
• Fenced for five years with Daniel Costin at Avant Garde Fencers Club.
• US Fencing All-American Second Team selection in 2017.
• Two-time US Fencing All-Academic First Team (2017, 2018).
• Bronze Medalist at the 2018 Division 2 North American Cup in Milwaukee, Wisc.
• Earned bronze at the 2017 California State High School Fencing Championships.
• Advanced to the Round of 16 at the BladeRunner Div1A ROC in consecutive seasons (2017, 2018).
• Quarterfinalist at the 2017 Division 2 North American Cup in Baltimore, Md.
• Reached the Round of 16 at the 2017 Division 2 North American Cup in Portland, Ore.
• Finished in the Round of 32 at the 2017 Division 2 North American Cup in Cleveland, Ohio.

Madeleine Nishamura – Foil
(Northgate HS) Walnut Creek, Calif.
Prior to Cornell
• Four-time USA Fencing All-Academic First Team
• Represented the Cadet U.S. National Team from 2015 to 2019.
• Bronze medalist at the 2019 Junior Olympics after consecutive Round of 16 finishes (2017, 2018) and a Round of 32 finish in 2016.
• Advanced to the Round of 16 at five North American Cup events with a Quarterfinal appearance in 2016, where she took fifth place overall.
• Took ninth place as an individual and earned a fifth place team finish at the 2018 Cadet World Cup.
• Won silver with a second place team finish at the 2017 Cadet World Cup in Budapest, Hungary.
• Advanced to six Round of 32 finishes at various Cadet World Cup events from 2016 to 2018.
• Silver medalist at the 2015 National Championships.
• Took eighth place at the 2016 National Championships.
• Won a pair of gold medals at the UCSD BladeRunner Division 1A Event (2016, 2018).
• Finished in 19th place at the 2019 Division 1 Championships.
• Back-to-back Round of 16 finishes at the Division 1 Championships in 2017 (16th place) and 2018 (11th place).

Briana Parris – Foil

• Fenced for six years with Stas Gutkovskiy at Gutkovskiy Fencing Academy.
• Three-time USA Fencing All-Academic Team honoree.
• Gold medalist as team captain at the 2018 Junior Team Junior Olympic National Championships.
• Took 16th at the 2018 Cadet Junior Olympic National Championships.
• Finished eighth at the 2018 Division 1A July Challenge National Championships after a 25th place finish at the 2017 event.
• Placed 51st in both the Cadet and Junior events at the 2017 Junior Olympic National Championships.
• Was 48th overall at the 2017 Division 1 North American Cup.
• Took 26th at the 2016 Junior July Challenge National Championships.
• Finished 28th at the 2016 Cadet Junior Olympic National Championships.
