PHILIPPI, W.V. - The Cornell sprint football team opened its 2019 season with a 38-21 win on the road over Alderson Broaddus. This marks the third consecutive time the Big Red has opened the season with a road win.
Cornell fell behind early as Alderson Broaddus' Gabe Ray and Tyler Smith each secured a touchdown for the Battlers. With a hard start to the game, the Big Red entered the second quarter losing, 14-0.
The Big Red responded to the Alderson Broaddus touchdowns with 73 yards in eight plays that resulted in a two-yard touchdown rush by senior
Will Griffen. With its next possession, Cornell's Griffen and
Aneesh Agrawal ran the ball to the two-yard line, only for Griffen to bring the ball into the touchdown zone for the second time in the second quarter.
With the score tied, 14-14, the Battlers' Tyler Smith scored another touchdown. The Big Red tied the score up again with 11 seconds on the second quarter clock. With 16 plays and 70 yards in one turn on the ball, Griffen finished the play with a strong one-yard touchdown.
The Big Red defense was a stronghold in the second half as Alderson Broaddus was not able to get any points on the board.
After some back and forth, Griffen was able to find his way to the zone for his fourth touchdown of the afternoon. Leading 28-21, Cornell's kicker
Ben Finkelstein made a successful 26-yard field goal to put the Big Red up, 31-21, going into the fourth quarter.
Jacob Wynkoop closed out the game with his first collegiate touchdown. The freshman went in for a one-yard rush to put Cornell up, 38-21, with 2:17 left on the fourth-quarter clock.
Led by
Will Griffen, who had six receptions on the afternoon, and Justin Mandell and
Reed Fratt, who each had four, six different Big Red players caught a pass.
On the defensive end, Cornell forced two turnovers with one interception, by
John Orona, and one forced fumble.
Matt Peck led the pack with six tackles, and was closely followed by
Julian Iacovelli, who had five. Iacovelli and Calvin Hosler teamed up for the Big Red defense's sole sack of the afternoon.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, Sept. 20 as it returns to Schoellkopf Field to take on Penn at 7 p.m.
