ITHACA, N.Y. - The Big Red field hockey team won a hard-fought 2-1 game this afternoon against #18 Syracuse on Marsha Dodson Field. This win marks the first against the Orange for Cornell since 2007.
Sophomore forward
Claire Jones got the Big Red on the board early in the contest scoring on a penalty corner in the fifth minute. With assists by
Taylor Gladd and
Grace Royer, Cornell executed the corner in a clean and controlled fashion.
Freshman defender
Caroline Ramsey tipped the ball off a short pass by
Bridget Mahoney to further the Big Red's lead to 2-0 in the nineteenth minute.
Syracuse came back from halftime with an offensive game plan pushing the Cornell defense even harder.The Orange executed four shots and two penalty corners in the third period but the Bed Red defense held the score at 2-0.
Coming back from the break, Syracuse earned a penalty corner four minutes into the fourth quarter allowing Charlotte de Vries to score off a rebounded shot by SJ Quigley. Despite five more corners and six more shots, taken by the Orange, in the fourth quarter, the Big Red held their stance to finish the game with a 2-1 lead.
Maddie Henry left the field with her first win on the season and a .833 save percentage for the game. This win puts Henry in a tie for 10th place in career wins (16) in the Cornell All-Time Record Book. She is tied with Sue Zieman (1983-85) and Maureen Sullivan (1998-2000).
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow, Sept. 8, as it hosts Lock Haven for a Sunday afternoon contest at 3:30 p.m.
