Field Hockey Overcomes Lock Haven, 3-2, in Double Overtime

ITHACA, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Claire Jones scored the game-winning goal to lead the Big Red to a 3-2 win in double overtime against Lock Haven University on Sunday.

Cornell (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) held a slight advantage in shots, outshooting the Bald Eagles, 12-9 (7-5 on goal). The Big Red finished with 11 corners to Lock Haven's seven, but both teams' defensive corner teams showed up to match the offensive squads.

Senior midfielder Maddy Conklin opened the game with a quick score just 46 seconds into the first quarter; after receiving a pass she dribbled through the right-side of the circle for a quick shot to the left corner of the goal. Conklin's goal served as the second time, in two games, that Cornell has earned the first goal of the match and entered the first quarter break 1-0.

Lock Haven increased the pressure during the second quarter earning two goals in ten minutes. With a quick score by Jazmin Palma in the first minute of the second quarter, the Bald Eagles tied the score at 1-1. Three shots and 10 minutes later, Megan Weeks tipped in a shot from Tia Judy to earn Lock Haven a 2-1 lead.

The third quarter proved to be a midfield game as neither team was able to get many chances on net, but the Big Red brought the heat for the fourth quarter. Earning a 6-0 advantage in shots and a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners Cornell dominated the final 15 minutes of the game. Freshman defender Caroline Ramsey scored her second goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 with less than nine minutes left in regulation. After a shot by Jones was saved by Joaquina Orlandi, Ramsey grabbed the ball to drop it in the net for a Big Red goal. The match finished 2-2 in

With strong defenses on the field, Cornell did not allow the Bald Eagles to score during their three penalty corner attempts. On the flip side, Lock Haven also brought the heat, not allowing the ball to cross the goal line during the Big Red's two corner attempts during the first overtime.

The Big Red opened the second overtime with a corner attempt just 46 seconds after the whistle. With junior defender Alison Munford on the input, Jones was able to score the final goal for Cornell, on a pass from Conklin, within the first minute of the second overtime.

Senior goalie Maddie Henry finished with three saves and her 17th career win. Henry is now tied for 8th in career wins with Carolyn Horner (2010-13) and Molly Kauffman (1994-96). Henry needs only three more wins to earn second place.

After a full week of rest the Big Red returns to Marsha Dodson Field on Sunday, Sept. 15, for a 12 p.m. contest against Saint Joseph's.
