Union Holds Off #4 Women's Ice Hockey With a Friday Night Tie

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior Kristin O'Neill scored the lone Cornell goal to secure a 1-1 tie against ECAC Hockey foe, Union, Friday evening.

The Dutchwomen were the first to get on the board during the first period. At 15:50, Katelynn Russ intercepted a Big Red pass in Union's offensive zone. After skating to find a better angle, Russ took a shot and put the puck in the back of the net.

Coming back from the first intermission, Cornell saw more shots and goal opportunities but Union's freshman goalie Bella McKee would not allow the puck passed her.

In a similar fashion to the Dutchwomen's goal, Cornell ties the score off a turnover. Senior Jaime Bourbonnais intercepted a Union pass and, when she saw her open, dumped the puck towards O'Neill's stick. With the quick thinking, and O'Neill spontaneous shot, the first-year goalie did not have time to turn and the Big Red had tied the score at 1-1.

As the game entered the third period, Cornell had outshot Union, 19-8, but that did not stop McKee from standing her guard in goal. The Big Red's 13 shots on goal proved not enough as an overtime period ended the game.

In the end, the Big Red outshot the Dutchwomen, 34-12, with O'Neill leading the charge on eight shots.

Junior goalie Lindsay Browning preserved the tie with 11 saves.

Cornell will remain in the Capital District to play Rensselaer on Saturday (Jan. 11). The puck drop in Troy, N.Y. will be at 3 p.m.
