TROY, N.Y. - Senior defenders
Jaime Bourbonnais and
Micah Zandee-Hart each scored a goal to lead the Cornell women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 win at Rensselaer, Saturday evening.
After a scoreless first period, Zandee-Hart opened the scoring in the second minute of the second period. As freshman
Kaitlyn Isaac scrambled for the puck with an Engineer skater, she tipped it to freshman
Izzy Daniel. Once Daniel had possession, she passed it across the ice for Zandee-Hart to finish off the play with a shot from the blue line. Rensselaer was not able to answer the Big Red's first tally and Cornell entered the final break with a one-goal lead.
Bourbonnais sealed the win with a second Big Red goal in the sixth minute of the final period. After receiving a short backward pass from Bourbonnais to set up the play, junior
Kendra Nealey sent a beautiful pass from the Cornell defensive faceoff circle to senior
Paige Lewis at center ice. Lewis continued to bring the ice into the offensive zone and passed it to Bourbonnais for a shot from the inside corner of the slot.
As the Engineers were unable to answer with a single tally, junior goalie
Lindsay Browning made 18 saves to secure her sixth career shutout. A sixth shutout for the netminder puts her in ninth place on the program's top-ten for career shutouts.
The Cornell offense put up an outrageous 46 shots on goal to Rensselaer's 18. Overall, the Big Red made 76 shots and the Engineers attempted a goal 28 times.
Cornell women's ice hockey returns home for an Ivy League weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard on Jan. 17-18.
