ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior
Maddie Mills and sophomore
Gillis Frechette each scored two goals to lead the Cornell women's ice hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Ivy League foe, Dartmouth, Friday afternoon.
Mills got the ball rolling with 6:32 on the first-period clock. The Big Green gained possession behind the Cornell goal but as the skater came around the bend, Mills stole the puck for a quick score. The first saw the most shots on goal from the Big Red but the game entered the first intermission with a 1-0 score.
Taking advantage of a power play, Mills earned her second goal of the game. As senior
Jaime Bourbonnais skated around the right side of the offensive zone, she sent a pass straight to the open Mills for a second Cornell goal.
In another clean goal for the Big Red, Bourbonnais grabbed a loose puck and sent it behind her to senior
Micah Zandee-Hart. The defender saw an open Frechette at center ice for a pass from Cornell's red line. Frechette went straight to the goalie and with a dodge, she sent the puck into the net from just outside the crease.
For the Big Red's final score of the second period, junior defender
Willow Slobodzian ended up on the goalie crease in the perfect spot for a goal. With a feed from senior
Kristin O'Neill and a goalie block from Mills, Slobodzian was able to take her time to send the puck into the net at just the right angle.
Returning from the final intermission, Frechette scored Cornell's final goal of the night in the fifth minute of play. Frechette tipped the puck into the net just in time to slip under the goalie's pads. Pulled free off a defender by senior
Grace Graham, senior
Paige Lewis brought the puck around the net to find Frechette for the goal.
Just two minutes later, the Dartmouth's Catherine Trevors scored the long Big Green goal to finalize the score at 5-1.
Junior goalie
Lindsay Browning held down the fort with eight saves, while the Cornell offense led the way with 37 shots to Dartmouth's nine.
The Big Red return to Lynah Rink tomorrow, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. to play #9 Harvard.
