PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 32-10 Brown run that spanned the two halves rocketed Brown past Cornell 74-63 on Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears evened their record at 8-8 (1-2 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 4-12 (1-2 Ivy).
Josh Warren led four Cornell double figure scorers with 17 points and added five rebounds, while
Jimmy Boeheim notched 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Terrance McBride was credited with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds and
Bryan Knapp had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals while playing lockdown defense on Brown's Brandon Anderson, the Ivy League's second-leading scorer. Anderson shot just 1-of-16 from the floor for seven points.
Greg Dolan (seven points) and
Dean Noll (six points) rounded out the Cornell scorers. The Big Red shot 45 percent from the floor overall and turned the ball over 19 times.
Brown used its defense and 40-30 rebounding edge, including 14-8 on the offensive glass, to muscle to their first Ivy win of the season. Zach Hunsaker had a game-high 20 points and added five rebounds and three steals, while Tamenang Choh (14 points, six rebounds, four assists) and Jaylan Gainey (12 points, eight rebounds) also hit for double figures. Gainey did his damage on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor. The Bears held a decisive 27-7 edge in free throw attempts.
The Big Red led 30-23 with seven minutes to play in the first half after a Knapp 3-pointer, his second of the night, forced a Brown timeout. The Bears answered right back and were in the lead less than two minutes later, taking a 41-36 edge into the break and never again trailing.
The lead grew to as many as 15 midway through the second half and the Big Red never got closer than eight, the last time coming with just under two minutes remaining.
First Half
• Cornell controlled the first 13 minutes as its offense was humming with Warren scoring 11 and Knapp hitting for eight.
• The 30-23 Big Red lead was short-lived, as the Bears ran off a 12-0 run to take a 35-30 edge in a little more than three minutes.
• Trailing by three with the ball and just 12 seconds left, Cornell turned the ball over and Zach Hunsaker, who had 15 points at the break, went the length of the court and his layup with a second to play was goaltended to put the home team up 41-36 at the break.
• Hunsaker was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field with three 3-pointers en route to his 15 points to lead Brown, while Warren hit all five of his shots for 13 points to lead Cornell.
• Terrance McBride had four of Cornell's 10 first half assists, but the Bears shot 52 percent from the floor to take the lead in the locker room.
Second Half
• Brown came out of the locker room with a 14-4 run to push a five-point game with 15 and the Big Red would never recover.
• Consecutive 3-pointers by Choh and Hunsaker flipped a five-point game to 11
• Cornell turned the ball over 10 times after the break and couldn't take advantage of its defense, which held Brown to 36 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes, with Anderson missing all nine of his field goals.
• Seven offensive rebounds and 11-of-15 shooting from the free-throw line was the difference for Brown.
• McBride scored nine points and Boeheim had eight to go along with five boards to lead the Big Red after halftime.
• Jaylan Gainey made all four of his field goals for eight points and four boards in the final 20 minutes..
