#4 Women's Ice Hockey Completes Sweep of Mercyhurst With 2-1 Overtime Win

ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior forward Maddie Mills scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Cornell women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over visitor, Mercyhurst, Sunday afternoon.

The Big Red opened the game with a score from the slot as the first period was winding down. With 6:03 on the clock, senior forward Amy Curlew received a short pass from senior forward Kristin O'Neill, from behind the net, for the first tally of the night.

The first intermission saw a 1-0 Cornell lead, but the Lakers were able to tie the score during a 5-v-3 power play in the second minute of the middle period. Scoring from the same spot as the night before, Emma Nuutinen made it a tied game.

A scoreless third period saw 10 Big Red shots on goal, and 10 saves for Mercyhurst goalie Jenna Silvonen.

Just one minute and 30 seconds into overtime, O'Neill stole the puck from a Laker defender at center ice. Skating down towards the goal O'Neill centered the puck for an incoming Mills. Faking a cross, Mills sent the puck underneath Silvonen's leg for the game-winning score.

Junior goalie Lindsay Browning totaled 14 saves while the Cornell offense compiled 35 shots on goal.

Before returning to Lynah on Jan. 17, the Big Red women's ice hockey team will travel to Central New York to take on ECAC Hockey foes Union and Rensselaer on Jan. 10-11.
