ITHACA, N.Y. -- Two of the hottest teams in the country will look to extend win streaks when Cornell and Dartmouth meet on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1948 at 2 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red enters the game 6-1 with its lone loss to No. 5 Army, while the Big Green is 5-1 and enters the weekend riding a five-game win streak since opening the season with a loss at Penn.
Wins over Dartmouth this weekend and Penn on Thanksgiving would give Cornell the mythical Ivy title with a perfect 4-0 mark against Ancient Eight opponents.
The winner of the game will also take an edge in the longtime series, currently tied 15-15-1. The Big Green hasn't won in Ithaca since 1936.
Cornell is coming off a mud-filled 14-6 triumph over Central New York rival Colgate at Schoellkopf. Head coach Lefty James' team rallied with 14 second half points and limited its opponent from Hamilton to 137 total yards and one pass completion, a 59-yard score that game primarily due to the field conditions. Both Jeff Fleischman and Bob Dean rushed for touchdowns and Dean added both PAT kicks in the win.
The line has been the Big Red's strength, with tackles Dick Clark and Henry Drost and guard Joe Quinn leading the way. Dean, Fleischman, Frank "Moose" Miller and end Harry Cassel have been standouts on the offense.
Head coach Tuss McLaughry's Dartmouth team is led by quarterback John Clayton and end Dale Armstrong. Clayton has thrown for seven touchdowns on the season, completing 29-of-59 passes for 510 yards. In all, the Big Green has scored 10 of its 18 touchdowns through the air.
