ITHACA, N.Y. -- Bob Dean put the go-ahead points on the board late in the fourth quarter and the defense did the rest as Cornell improved to 7-1 with a 27-26 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 13, 1948 at Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red victory snapped the Big Green's five-game win streak.

Trailing 26-20, the Big Red used an 11-play, 60-yard scoring drive with Dean plowing over from the 1-yard line to knot the score with 2:40 remaining. The senior booted the PAT kick to take the lead and cap off an outstanding individual effort. He averaged 7.6 yards per carry to help the Big Red's ground game after the loss of leading rusher Jeff Fleischman due to injury. As a punter, Dean flipped the field with a 45.7 yard average on seven punts. He also booted three of four PATs, providing the difference on the scoreboard along with his final touchdown.
The Big Red piled up 405 total yards, including 375 on the ground, and the defense forced three turnovers. Its interception immediately following the Cornell go-ahead touchdown in the the final minutes sealed the victory.
The first minutes of the game wouldn't let anyone in on how it would all end. The Big Green marched right down the field and put a touchdown on the board after getting a three-and-out by the Big Red to go up 6-0 just 132 seconds in. Dartmouth led 13-7 at the half and 26-14 entering the fourth quarter, but Dean and Cornell rallied.
Dartmouth's Johnny Clayton completed 9-of-17 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted on the final drive.
Besides Dean's score, Frank Bradley (21-yard run), Moose Miller (38-yard run) and Paul Girolamo (2-yard run) each found the end zone.
