NEW YORK, N.Y. -- All-American George Pfann accounted for three touchdowns and undefeated Cornell extended its win streak to 22 games with a 35-0 victory over Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 10, 1923 at the Polo Grounds. Nearly 30,000 fans saw the Big Red improve to 6-0 on the season, while the Lions fell to 3-3-1.
The two-time defending national champions scored in every quarter with Pfann tallying 17 total points on his own with two rushing touchdowns and 5-of-5 kicking on PATs. He also threw for a score. Pfann directed an offense that piled up 426 rushing yards (490 yards total) and 21 first downs, while head coach Gil Dobie's defense limited the Lions to 75 yards on the ground and three total first downs.
Columbia's only brief chance to score came after a second quarter Big Red fumble set up the Lions on the Cornell 26. S 25-yard field goal attempt by Stephen Schimititsch went wide and the Lions never threatened the goal.
At that point, the Big Red already led 7-0. Pfann got off on a 55-yard run that set up a 1-yard score from Floyd Ramsay, then booted the extra-point. It went to 14-0 in the second when Pfann caught Eli Buckley in the flat for an eventual 20-yard gainer.
Cornell doubled the lead in the third quarter. A quick strike score opened the second half, as it took the visitors just three plays to put a third touchdown on the board. A 48-yard run by Ramsey set up a 20-yard score on the ground by Pfann.
Charles Cassidy made it 28-0 late in the third and Pfann capped the scoring with a highlight 10-yard touchdown run. The Big Red captain was hit by two defenders at the 4, stayed on his feet and downed the ball over the goal to cap the scoring.
