ITHACA, N.Y. — The Ivy League announced Monday that freshman pitcher
Spencer Edwards has been named the Baseball Rookie of the Week.
Making his first collegiate start against a ranked opponent on the road, Edwards was spectacular on Saturday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina. He worked five innings against 16th-Duke with seven strikeouts, yielding just two hits. He would eventually be tagged for one earned run in an inning where an attempted sacrifice bunt prolonged an inning when it became a base hit.
The native of Rancho Santa Margarita, California is Cornell's first Ivy League Rookie of the Week since April 19, 2016, when Mark Fraser garnered the honor after extending a hitting streak to six games. The Big Red claimed just one of the Ivy League's weekly awards all of last season, when senior
Colby Wyatt was named the pitcher of the week on March 11, 2019 after a brilliant start at Navy.
The Big Red is back in action this weekend for a four-game series against Niagara at neutral site in Colonial Heights, Virginia. The teams are scheduled to play doubleheaders starting at noon Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
