Smith Charles closed day one of the Ivy League Indoor Track and Field Heptagonal Championship meet as the long jump champion to lead the Cornell men's track and field team. The Big Red currently sits in fourth place after the first day of competition.
The Big Red currently has a total of 17 points, which is seven behind third-place Princeton.
Big Hits
- Charles jumped for a 7.32m long jump, a personal record, to earn his first Ivy League Champion title.
- Of the four events scored on day one, three members of the Big Red have scored.
- In addition to Charles, sophomores Johannes Stromhaug (pole vault) and Ian Frost (weight throw) finished third and fifth, respectively, to earn points for Cornell.
- The Big Red also had six members qualify for the final round in their respective events, which will take place on Sunday.
- Charles, once again, leads the pack of qualifiers with his 60-meter dash time. His 6.84 career-best run is tied for the tenth best 60 time in program history.
- Freshman Robert Enck finished with a personal record to lead him to the finals in the 800 while fellow classmate Christin Martin qualified for his first Ivy League finals in the 60m hurdles with a career-best.
- Juniors Tien Henderson (200), Solomon Lawrence (800) and Jonathan Plass (1000) round out those who qualified for Sunday's finals.
- With personal records in the long jump and the high jump, senior Clayton Jeffrey sits in fourth place for the heptathlon. The men will finish this multi-event competition with the final three events on Sunday.
