ITHACA, N.Y. - Facing each other a day later than originally expected, the Cornell men's tennis team was defeated by #14 Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 8, 4-1. A massive snowstorm in the Northeast dumped a foot of snow on Cornell's campus, forcing the match, originally schedule for Friday, to be postponed.
It's the first loss of the season for Cornell, as the Big Red falls to 3-1 overall after a hot start that featured a trio of 7-0 victories.
Michigan opened the match by winning the doubles point, thanks in part to the No. 4-ranked doubles pairing of Mattias Siimar and Andrew Fenty.
Alafia Ayeni and
Lev Kazakov played at No. 1 doubles for Cornell, losing to Siimar/Fenty by a 6-4 tally. Michigan also won at No. 2 doubles, using the No. 42-ranked duo of Ondrej Styler and Connor Johnston, who defeated
Eero Vasa/
Daniel Soyfer, 6-4.
Soyfer was Cornell's lone winner of the afternoon, defeating No. 96-ranked Patrick Maloney in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Maloney started the season unranked, but checked in a #96 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released on Feb. 5. Michigan used wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to clinch victory over the Big Red.
Up Next: Cornell will host the ECAC Indoor Tennis Championship, starting on Friday, Feb. 14 at 9 a.m. in the Reis Tennis Center.
