ITHACA, N.Y. — Junior goaltender
Matthew Galajda has been named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Year and
Mike Schafer '86 has been named the Ivy League Coach of the Year for a third straight season, highlights the All-Ivy League awards announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior defenseman
Yanni Kaldis is on the All-Ivy League first team for a fourth straight year, where he joins junior forward
Morgan Barron for a second straight year and Galajda. It marks the second straight season that Cornell has placed three players on the first team. Freshman defenseman
Sam Malinski also earned garnered honorable mention.
Only Ivy League statistics are considered for the All-Ivy squads, creating a unique wrinkle for the teams that play in a league within another league (ECAC Hockey). But for Cornell, the numbers look favorable in just about any light. Currently ranked #1 in the country in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, Cornell was 8-1-1 in Ancient Eight games to win the program's third straight and 24th overall Ivy League title (20th outright).
Kaldis becomes the Big Red's first four-time All-Ivy League first-team selection in program history. He had eight assists over the 10 Ivy League games, which was tied for the most among defensemen. Beyond the offense, Kaldis is also among the Big Red's leaders in ice time for the season, seeing time on power plays, penalty kills and at even strength.
Barron collects his second All-Ivy honor after posting 11 points on six goals and five assists in Ivy play. The six goals ranked tied for second in Ancient Eight play, including a hat trick within 22 minutes of play in the Big Red's 6-2 drubbing of Yale in its home opener on Nov. 9.
Galajda returned to All-Ivy League Player of the Year for a second time, this year sharing the honor with Dartmouth forward Drew O'Connor. Galajda's All-Ivy first team honor is also the second of his career, after he posted an 8-1-1 record, 1.30 goals against average and .938 save percentage against the other Ivy League teams this year.
Malinski earned honorable mention by scoring twice and adding six assists for eight points in Ivy contests, which led all of the league's freshman defensemen.
This is only the fifth year of the Ivy League Coach of the Year honor being awarded, with Schafer now winning the honor three times. Under his guidance, Cornell is now 25-3-4 in its last 32 Ivy League games.
