BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Cornell wrestling enjoyed a successful first session at the 2020 EIWA Championships on Friday, March 6, sitting in third place with 15.5 team points, behind Lehigh (22) and Army (17.5). Top-seeded 133-pounder
Chas Tucker received a bye into the quarterfinals and didn't wrestle this morning. Cornell is the only team to advance all 10 of its wrestlers to the quarterfinals, with Lehigh and Army both advancing nine.
Dom LaJoie started the day on the right foot for Cornell, taking down the sixth-seeded wrestler at 125 pounds, Navy's Logan Treaster, 4-2. LaJoie scored a second period takedown to decide the bout, also adding points for an escape and a penalty in the third period. Using a decisive 16-3 victory over Sacred Heart's Gerard Daly,
Noah Baughman also advanced to the quarters following a match that saw him score six takedowns.
Hunter Richard topped Columbia's Andrew Garr by major decision, 13-5, riding Garr for over three minutes in the process. After action was carried off the mat with 17 seconds remaining, Richard shot off the whistle to score one final takedown and earn the major. Avenging an earlier season loss was
Adam Santoro, who defeated Columbia's Kyle Mosher, taking him down three times in a 7-3 victory. Santoro's win gave Cornell quarterfinalists at each of the first five weights.
A sudden victory win vaulted
Milik Dawkins into Friday night's quarterfinals after he used a takedown in the final 20 seconds to send Lehigh's Brian Meyer to the consolation bracket.
Brandon Womack made quick work of his opponent in the first round, pinning Crew Fullerton of Franklin & Marshall in 1:46.
Jonathan Loew kept Cornell's momentum going with a major decision at 184 pounds. Loew led 5-0 heading into the final moments of the bout, scoring a takedown in short-time to defeat Long Island's Dan McClure.
Shooting right out of the gate was
